What Is the Canada Skilled Worker Visa?
Canada does not have a single visa called the “Skilled Worker Visa.” The correct route for most skilled workers is the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) — managed through Canada’s Express Entry system.
The Federal Skilled Worker Program is specifically designed for internationally trained professionals who want to build a future in Canada — even if they have no prior Canadian work experience, studies, or family connections in the country.
This is the route most applicants from Nigeria, India, Kenya and Nepal use to gain Canadian permanent residence.
Who Qualifies for the Canada Skilled Worker Visa 2026?
You must meet all five of the following requirements:
1. Work Experience
You need at least one year of continuous full-time paid skilled work experience in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 within the past 10 years.
The program includes 370 eligible occupations under NOC TEER categories 0 (management), 1 (professional), 2 (technical/skilled trades), and 3 (intermediate jobs requiring college diplomas or apprenticeship training). Examples include financial managers, software developers, registered nurses, and construction managers.
2. Language Proficiency
Language scores must reach CLB 7 in all four abilities in English or French. IELTS, CELPIP and PTE are accepted for English. TEF and TCF are accepted for French. The higher your language score, the stronger your application.
3. Education
You must hold at least a Canadian high school diploma or an equivalent foreign qualification. Foreign credentials must be supported by an Educational Credentials Assessment (ECA).
4. Points Grid Score
Candidates must hit 67 of 100 points on the Six Selection Factors covering age, education, language, work experience, arranged employment, and adaptability.
Meeting 67 points makes you eligible. It does not guarantee an invitation to apply — your CRS score determines that.
5. Settlement Funds
You need proof of funds to meet the minimum requirements of the FSW program unless you are authorised to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. IRCC updates the minimum required funds annually — as of July 2025, a single applicant needs $15,263 and two people need $19,001.
What Are the Six Selection Factors Canada Skilled Worker Visa 2026 ?
Your 67-point eligibility score is calculated across six areas:

Language carries the most weight. A candidate who achieves CLB 9 in all four abilities earns the full 28 points for the first official language alone. Education is the second-largest factor — a Master’s or PhD earns 25 points. Work experience awards up to 15 points for six or more years of qualifying experience.
What Happens After You Score 67 Points?
Scoring 67 points gets you into the Express Entry pool. Once in the pool, you are ranked against all other candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) — scored out of 1,200 points.
In early 2026, CRS cut-offs have ranged from 475 to 510 for general draws and 420 to 480 for category-based draws.
If your occupation is in a priority category — healthcare, STEM, trades or French language — you may receive an invitation at a significantly lower score.
How Long Does It Take?
As of March 2026, IRCC’s processing time for FSW applications is 7 months from receipt of a complete application, against a 6-month service standard.
Processing begins only after you receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) and submit your full permanent residence application. Time spent in the Express Entry pool waiting for an ITA is separate and depends entirely on your CRS score.
The Biggest Mistakes Skilled Worker Applicants Make
1. Choosing the wrong NOC code.

Many applicants submit a profile before maximising their CRS score. Retaking a language test or obtaining a higher education assessment can add significant points — potentially the difference between waiting years and receiving an invitation within months.
3. Missing documents at the ITA stage.
After receiving your ITA, you have just 60 days to submit a complete application. One missing document can mean refusal and loss of your invitation entirely.
